Sitting on the sand on Robberg beach, newly engaged and dreaming of what our lives together might look like, we turned to each other and said, “we could live here someday”.
We didn’t know that we were looking for Moonshine, but somehow Moonshine found us that summer. It had all started for Moonshine back in 1998, when Sue and Albert arrived on the land in an old caravan, built a long drop and a paraffin shower and got to work building the cabins and the house over the 25 years that they called this magical place home. They restored the indigenous forest, leaving only the native trees. What we found when we first arrived is what every Moonshine guest finds when they arrive here – a place built with love and imagination. From the quirky art showers to the curved swimming pool, Moonshine is full of handcrafted and unique spaces, and we felt very honoured to be trusted with her next chapter.
Since we moved here in January 2024, we’ve put all our own love into reimagining the cabins, cottage and farmhouse into its next manifestation. The same Moonshine soul as always, but updated interiors and facilities. We also adopted a beautiful Great Dane who is the colour of moon dust, two lazy tuxedo cats and brought home a honey-coloured puppy who thinks she’s a human. You’ll likely meet them at the garden gate. We built a ruby-red chicken hotel so we could enjoy our own eggs, added 3 citrus trees to the little orchard in the back garden, and are trying to become better subsistence salad farmers!
We’ve learnt how to harvest rainwater, where the fireflies like to disco just after dusk, which fruit the monkeys like to steal, and which trees the birds like most. We danced outside in a thunderstorm. We bought a chainsaw! We dug a dam. And in the first year here we renovated all 6 cabins, a laundry room, a woodshed, the pool area, and built our dream home together.
We danced outside in a thunderstorm Before Moonshine, we’d both spent much of the last decade travelling the world and working remotely, so finding somewhere to settle down really feels like the next big adventure. We hope everyone who passes through Moonshine feels that this is home for them too, for one night or for many.
